Course
description:
Healthcare industry has its own jargon. It has
specialized languages and terms that are used for
communication between different entities within
healthcare. Physicians use certain terms to depict a
disease or prognosis; nurses use terms that have shared
meaning to depict human response to diseases and nurses'
actions to provide care. Specialized terminologies and
classifications exist to describe diseases, diagnostic
procedures, human responses to disease, therapeutic
procedures, outcomes of care, medications and
pharmaceuticals, findings, organisms, anatomy, and
supplies and equipment. This course is intended to
introduce healthcare informatics student to this complex
body of terms.
The course introduces students to the structure and
components of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes and word
roots and how to break down a medical term by simply
knowing the meaning of its components. In addition the
course introduces students to the structure and use of
health care terminologies, classifications, and coding
schemes, with special emphasis on International
Classification of Diseases (ICD), Healthcare Common
Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Logical Observation
Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC), Current Procedural
Terminology (CPT), NANDA's Nursing Diagnoses, Nursing
Intervention Classification (NIC), Nursing Outcomes
Classification (NOC), National Drug Code (NDC), Common

Care Facility Procedures - Undergraduate Health
Informatics Program - Montana Tech University |
|
Course description:
Health Care
Organizations (HCOs) provide services and conduct
business operations through procedures. Proper procedure
implementation requires knowledge, information, data,
equipment or tools, space, time, and a carrier or agent.
Procedures in HCOs differ in terms of frequency,
complexity, number of departments and individuals
involved, cost, consequences, and relatedness to patient
care operations. Procedures can be clinical or
administrative in nature. This course is designed to
give students a broad understanding of the structure and
mission of different HCOs, a general overview of the
duties and responsibilities of major departments and
units within HCO and an in-depth examination of the most
frequent and significant procedures performed in HCOs.
Students will be able to
recognize and realize the impact of the adoption and
application of information technology in reforming HCO
procedures to meet health care growing needs and achieve
patient-centered coordinated care; improve patient
safety and quality of services; streamline charging,
billing and payment systems; improve staff productivity,
effectiveness and efficiency; improve resources
management; and improve the HCOs' capability to meet its
mission and strategic goals in an efficient manner.

Health Systems
and Policy
- Graduate Nursing Program - JUST |
|
Description and Overview:
Health leads to wealth and wealth leads to better
health. Healthy populations tend to lead happy and
productive lives. It is the duty of governments, health
systems and other systems to ensure the highest level of
population health. Governments, through funding,
legislation, and provision of health services, play an
important role in influencing health status of people.
Politics (the process of making decisions for groups)
significantly influences the structure, finance,
distribution and delivery of health care services. The
main aim of this course is to provide students with an
in-depth analysis and understanding of health care
delivery systems: the structure, objectives, processes,
outcomes, and feedback mechanisms and to prepare them to
be effective participants in discussions and debates
over health care policy issues. Systems approach will be
utilized to achieve better understanding of health care
system. The course identifies and discusses the forces
that influence health care systems. Key areas to be
discussed and analyzed with respect to health care
services are organization, financing, quality, cost,
access, and distribution of health facilities and
personnel. The course will introduce students to the
policy making process in the US and in Jordan. Current
health policy problems will be discussed throughout the
semester to illustrate the complexity of policy-making
process and to provide an opportunity to apply theory
learned in class to “real world” situations. The course
will be conducted in a combination of lecture and
seminar format. Students are required to do library and
Internet research in addition to reading course
materials. Each student will be required to lead 1 ½
hour discussion. The instructor will assign topics to
the students and each student will read the related
readings and conduct library and Internet research and
then prepare a presentation to the class about the topic
and lead a group discussion about the topic. All
students are required to take an active part in all
discussions. |
